Study Abroad

I have been a study abroad enthusiast since my own semester abroad in Rome in 2012. My first-hand experience of the personal and academic development opportunities of education abroad have shaped my approach to teaching abroad. I seek to provide structure and support for students while encouraging the individual moments of reflection and exploration that allow for growth. Study abroad is a wholistic experience, and my courses reflect that.

ARTH 299/499: Survey of Italian Art & Architecture

Todi, Umbria

2024 & 2025

This course examines the art and architecture found on the Italian peninsula from Antiquity through the Baroque period, with a particular focus on the Late Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. We will pay particular attention to the cultures, monuments, and artists found in Central Italy. Classroom discussions will be ordered thematically with the aim of preparing students for on-site visits. This course is meant to provide you with an understanding of the visual culture of the peoples living in the Italian peninsula. We will look at the historical context of the objects and buildings, as well as the social, religious, and political circumstances of the artists or architects. We will also examine how older artistic and architectural traditions are used by later generations and why they have the desire to reference the past. This will help foster an understanding of the deep implications of the visual arts in the social and cultural contexts throughout the history of the Italian peninsula.

ITA 299: History & Culture of Southern Italy

Salerno, Campania

2022 & 2023

This 3-credit course provides the opportunity to explore Southern Italian history and culture while in Salerno and the surrounding region. We will explore the history of the Mezzogiorno from Greek colonialism to Diego Maradona. The thematic focus of this course is the rise and propagation of competing images of the Italian south, which has occupied the imagination of the Greeks, Romans, Angevin Kings, Spanish Viceroys, German play-writes, and cosmopolitan view-painters. Students will engage with such topics as history, art, language, cuisine, religion, music, and contemporary issues, and will develop a deeper understanding of southern Italy as a cultural and social force within the history of the Italian peninsula as a whole.
